Symphony of Science – ‘We Are All Connected’ (ft. Sagan, Feynman, deGrasse Tyson & Bill Nye)
Posted by admin on Feb.08, 2012, under Uncategorized
MP3 available at http://www.symphonyofscience.com.
“We Are All Connected” was made from sampling Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, The History Channel’s Universe series, Richard Feynman’s 1983 interviews, Neil deGrasse Tyson’s cosmic sermon, and Bill Nye’s Eyes of Nye Series, plus added visuals from The Elegant Universe (NOVA), Stephen Hawking’s Universe, Cosmos, the Powers of 10, and more. It is a tribute to great minds of science, intended to spread scientific knowledge and philosophy through the medium of music.

Lyrics:
[deGrasse Tyson]
We are all connected;
To each other, biologically
To the earth, chemically
To the rest of the universe atomically
[Feynman]
I think nature’s imagination
Is so much greater than man’s
She’s never going to let us relax
[Sagan]
We live in an in-between universe
Where things change all right
But according to patterns, rules,
Or as we call them, laws of nature
[Nye]
I’m this guy standing on a planet
Really I’m just a speck
Compared with a star, the planet is just another speck
To think about all of this
To think about the vast emptiness of space
There’s billions and billions of stars
Billions and billions of specks
[Sagan]
The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it
But the way those atoms are put together
The cosmos is also within us
We’re made of star stuff
We are a way for the cosmos to know itself
Across the sea of space
The stars are other suns
We have traveled this way before
And there is much to be learned
I find it elevating and exhilarating
To discover that we live in a universe
Which permits the evolution of molecular machines
As intricate and subtle as we
[deGrasse Tyson]
I know that the molecules in my body are traceable
To phenomena in the cosmos
That makes me want to grab people in the street
And say, have you heard this??
(Richard Feynman on hand drums and chanting)
[Feynman]
There’s this tremendous mess
Of waves all over in space
Which is the light bouncing around the room
And going from one thing to the other
And it’s all really there
But you gotta stop and think about it
About the complexity to really get the pleasure
And it’s all really there
The inconceivable nature of nature

@TheAsianEngineer …
@TheAsianEngineer You forgot to add that consciousness is a physical process instead. It requires energy instead of being energy.

@SallySunshine001 …
@SallySunshine001 Energy, as much as mystical as it might sound, is a simple human invented idea used to quantify physical phenomena. You can think of energy, for purposes of simplicity, as the “ability to do any physical thing”. We are created out of atoms which have mass and it turns out that mass is the same thing as energy because it can be converted to “the ability to do any physical thing”. Physical things are made of energy, consciousness isnt a physical thing.

@SallySunshine001 …
@SallySunshine001 Consciousness is the result of many complicated processes in your brain, and your brain is like a computer. But when you take a computer apart, its ability to solve 2x=4 doesn’t “transform” in some mysterious way, just because energy can’t be created or destroyed. When you die, your brain no longer functions and your consciousness is gone.

I’d just like to …
I’d just like to ask a question out of curiosity. My question is if everything is made of energy, that would also apply for consciousness, right? and if energy can’t be created or destroyed then what kind of transformations would the energy of consciousness take at the moment of death? I can assume it wouldn’t remain the same in any way, but what kind of forms of energy do you think it could transform to and why isn’t it detectable? I would love to hear some theories on this, thank you!

@cbcbarzarz im not …
@cbcbarzarz im not deciding what atheism means, it is anti-theism and just that by definition as it is the only requirement needed for one to consider themselves an atheist(although to most a strong belief in science is also required). anything else beyond it such as those facets outside of anti-theism is just unlabeled personal opinion or conviction but it is not a part of atheism because they vary from person to person

@DanteWhite Your …
@DanteWhite Your conception of atheism is wrong. You don’t get to decide what it means to everyone across the vastness of time just because you lack the ability to perceive facets of it outside of anti-theism.
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@DanteWhite Not al …
@DanteWhite Not al spirituality is theism although all theism is spirituality. Pantheism is a single issue view synonymous to atheistic naturalism except in its nomenclature. Pantheism is not a world view. Will reply to the rest later.

@smexijebus i never …
@smexijebus i never said atheists dont have morals, i know they do (more than any dogmatic jew-christian-muslim), but atheism as a philosophy only empathizes on being the anti-thesis of religion and it does not seem too have a common ground or a set of morals that one can derive from the concept of atheism itself,whereas in pantheism there is an encouraging of a set of morals. what i mean is that two atheist can have very different morals and two pantheist have more of a commonground
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@smexijebus well i …
@smexijebus well i dont think a pantheist can reject oneness and nature, i mean he can, but then he wouldn’t be a pantheist , and atheism(non-theism) rejects spirituality since spirituality is a part of theism.if an atheist accepts spirituality then he would not technically be an atheist also even though pantheist are atheist pantheism is much more than atheism and that remaining part of pantheism that is not atheism is what makes pantheism non-dull
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@DanteWhite And, on …
@DanteWhite And, on the note of morals from your other reply, I’d just like to say that the idea that atheists have no morals is absolutely idiotic. Everyone has morals, and everyone’s morals are different. No matter the religion, race, creed, age, or gender. Outside influences can have an effect on our morals, such as religion, but do not dictate them. Everyone also believes their morals are morally superior to others.
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@DanteWhite That’s …
@DanteWhite That’s more of a judgement on certain people, not the doctrine. Atheists can be spiritual, if they so choose, and pantheists can just as easily reject ‘oneness and nature’. As you’ve said, all pantheists /are/ atheists, but not all atheists are pantheists. With that said, how can you say atheistic views are dull, when pantheists are atheists.
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@smexijebus i …
@smexijebus i believe(my personal opinion) that atheism is dull because it doesn’t have a spiritual approach to existence, atheism to me is the negation of religion and it is brought up as a reactionary response to the dogma of mainstream western religions, when pantheism in turn embraces the concept of religion and spirituality. even tough all pantheist are technically atheist not all atheist are pantheist as some don’t care about the oneness of everything and don’t respect nature
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@Quintinohthree an …
@Quintinohthree an atheist can surely be a pantheist but if you are a pantheist then why bother being called an atheist since atheism is only a small part of pantheism but not the concept in its totality there are other belief systems that take atheism as a part of it but atheism isnt necessarily what sums up the whole thing.also pantheism unlike atheism has a set of morals and emphasizes that if we abuse nature, nature itself will metaphorically judge and condemn us.
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@DanteWhite And I …
@DanteWhite And I still don’t understand how you could believe that Atheism is dull, yet pantheism is not. A world without god is a beautiful world /because/ it’s ‘crazy random happenstance’. It’s like a tornado plowing through a junkyard and leaving behind a functioning airplane. Far less ‘exciting’ than if someone builds an imperfect model out of Lego.
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@DanteWhite …
@DanteWhite Pantheism is saying, in the most watered down and basic terms, that /everything/ is god. You and I, the atoms that we’re made of, the stars and planets, the laws of physics, chemistry, biology. And that god does not intervene, does not judge or attempt to enforce morals, because god is not a being, but everything. I see no difference between this and Atheism, save for the nomenclature.
February 8th, 2012 on 2:31 am
@DanteWhite
All …
@DanteWhite
All you’re doing is avoiding the issue here because in the end atheism and pantheism are simply different words for the same views. Seriously, that’s all. People who identify as pantheists may focus on different aspects, but in the end they have no difference in views. Moreover I find it a fallacious idea to say that an atheist can’t also be a pantheist. They can, many are, none really care.
