Why don’t the Americans like contact sports? They won’t play rugby unless they wear loads of padding?
Posted by admin on Feb.25, 2010, under Rich DVD
The rest of the world doesn’t. They wont play world football where as almost every other country in the world does, They cant find a driver to drive in formula 1 racing, (The richest sport on earth) Even there hockey players have to wear so much padding that they can hardly move. There main game is to hit a ball with a stick, A game that is only played in junior schools in the rest of the world. Why don’t they mix? Why are they so far behind?
Basket ball is a game only played by girls in the rest of the world.
Stibs, It’s no good you making statements like that and then running behind a (Stibs does not receive E Mails). You shame America. Your answer will be dicarded as being untrue.

Well for one, your favorite sport is soccer, or football if you prefer. A bunch of pony tail laden pretty boys sashaying their way across a pitch only to go down in a heap when another player breathes on them wrong. But it’s apparently a beautiful game by you guys. Yeah, nothing better than a 0-0 game. So beautiful indeed.
Why not watch the 2006 World Cup match between the U.S. and Italy. At least the Italians put some muscle into it. Players were knocked out, blood was drawn, tempers flared, red cards were drawn on both sides, and in the end, the pansy country known as the U.S. minus a player, fought to a 1-1 draw against the eventual winner, Italy, playing your favorite sport. Do that over and over again, and you may have our respect. Until then, whenever you have a comment, just let it go.
We do have a National Rugby team, it’s just that they aren’t any good. But any broken bones we can cause on the field is a victory in our book. Formula 1? I thought we were talking about tough sports. Driving around in a car, be it Nascar, or Formula 1, is for losers. It’s so hard to press a freakin’ pedal and turn the wheel, driving around in a multi million dollar priced car. How glamorous. Guess the toughness of that sport comes in the money, according to you. Michael Shumacher was such an incredible athlete, winning so many races. So much money he won. Such an athlete.
Put on some pads, play some American football, and when your spine is severed (which has happened with numerous players) tell me that American football isn’t violent, or doesn’t need pads ’cause we’re weak.
Another Brit tries to take the piss out of us Yanks. We’ve heard it all, and your attempt is rather weak. Try again son.

Because they aren’t as bulk and tough as the British Rugby teams and need more padding. Also, there is quite a few times in American football everyone piles onto one player. They need all the armor they can get!

The Americans aren’t dumb and aren’t trying to get seriously injured over a game lol. With that said, they would destroy any athletes from anywhere in the world.

Because they are a bunch of homophobes and scared of the actual contact ….

You are right, It’s sad but true. Americans are being left behind. There government for some reason won’t let them see the real world and I have read that the vast majority don’t even have passports As for contact sports, It is true that unless they are super padded then they wont play. In the real world almost every rugby player has had broken bones, It’s goes with the game and makes it more exciting.

We have rugby leagues….just not professional ones because the sport has never really gained a hell of a lot of popularity. And for all this talk of Americans being soft and shit, I have one rebuddle to that. Bruce Willis is a fuckin American, live free or die hard baby.

Perhaps they’re afraid of ruining their squeaky-clean manufactured image !
I often wonder about them not playing rugby too – I mean – they have all that padding to play American Football – but our guys play rugby without any protection (apart from perhaps a "box") – me included when I was at school !

OK, firstly i can’t stand yanks, so i am not going to blow smoke up them or anything ok!
They wear pads in NFL for one reason, the hits, and yes they are before you argue, are HARDER! It’s simply the way the game is played, the way an opponent is set up for a big hit. If you watch hits in NFL it is normally two players running flat out straight at each other, when do you get that in Rugby union or league? You don’t, Union is more about wrapping up and dragging down and league is to stop the advancing man with two or three guys in a line. Yes League hots are bigger than union but players only generally have 7-8 meters to gain momentum compared to an NFL player who is runnign full speed to catch a pass then gets smashed by a defensive player who has just sprinted 20 meters to intercept.
I personally hate NFL and other Yank sports, being English i love rugby, REAL football and cricket. But you have to hand it to them, they take some huge hits and it might not be possible without the gear they wear.

Peter M gives a pretty good answer
questions are really stupid when you dont really have a question and are just trying to bash something
rugby isnt popular in america, otherwise it would be played without pads. even professional and semi-pro rugby players wear pads. the only football players who wear pads are pro, semi-pro and school leagues. the majority of sand-lot football is full-contact tackle with no pads. same with hockey. and hockey is a big international sport in countries where it is relevant like russia and canada. btw, if you think hockey players cant move, you obviously have not watched a single game. they skate faster than any soccer or rugby player runs in that little tiny rink with 6-7 foot 2-300 pound guys all trying to hit each other.
another even bigger reason is money. sports, especially in america, is a BUSINESS not recreation. in europe, soccer makes money. in america, football, baseball, and basketball make money. the good athletes play in leagues where they are protected by the best pads and precautions available. also if they get injured the business loses money. they still get injured tho, its not like rugby players get more injuries than football players.
the reason why america is so far "behind"? again, money. there is no money in the international game, at least not as much as there is in america. its fiscally irresponsible for america to "mix" with the rest of the world. and your question is EASILY debatable as the world adopts many american sports and is making sports like basketball and baseball more and more popular. soccer is arguably thousands of years old, rugby hundreds, while football, basketball, and baseball are all very recent inventions.
ps basketball is the most tiring sport in the world, it is constant start-stop sprinting and if you have ever played REAL basketball you would know that the only other sport like it is hockey where they change lines every few minutes and makes the running in soccer and rugby feel like a cakewalk. if you have played real basketball then you would also know that it is a full-contact sport when played properly and anyways many girls would be offended by your comment
instead of trying to insult things try experiencing new things. its more fun, doesnt impede others, and lets you actually know something instead of spitting out drivel

Anyone who thinks yanks aren’t tough hasn’t watched UFC. And remember their soldiers saved all our butts in WW2 by screwing the Japs on all those Pacific Islands, so have a little respect. They wear all that padding because it looks good. So what? Look at those poofy Aussie AFL players in their tight shorts — now THOSE are a bunch of wankers and a wanky game to watch too.

American football started off as rugby. It was so rough in the early days that players used to die regularly. In the UK, they changed the rules so there was less serious injury. In the US, they changed the rules in a different way to stop serious injury. The new change of rules in the US didn’t prevent as much injury as they hoped so they started wearing padding.
The US do play soccer and have beaten England on a number of occasions.
Ice hockey played with the full padding is mainly played by Canadians, Russians and Scandinavians and it’s played in full padding as it’s one of the roughest team sports in the world.
Baseball is also the national sport of Cuba and Japan but you’re not having a go at those countries so this ‘question’ seems to be a simple case of xenophobia to me.
Basketball is not a game played by girls in schools, you may be getting it confused with netball. They’re as different as sports as rugby and American football. Basketball is a popular sport in countries outside the UK, that’s why they have it in the olympics.

Well, cheerio! What a beautiful morning to be hated!
What are you on about? I’ve played rugby here in the States on a semi-pro team with huge guys who played for keeps and didn’t hold back. We wore no padding whatsoever. Shirt, shorts, jock strap, knee socks, and cleats. I didn’t even wear a ball sack cup. And I’ve taken knees to the nuts.
There can be no comparison between rugby and American football. I’ve seen guys try to play rugby the same way that they play American football, and that’s when the injuries happen. You can’t have 6’3" 225 pound guys running full speed into each other without getting serious injuries. Rugby is played in a softer style. I’ve seen ears ripped in the scrums, I’ve seen guys get their heads split with cleats because guys kick them intentionally while they are laying on the ground. It’s fun, but crazy.
The rest of the world is trying really hard to catch up to us in basketball, not just girls. It seems like the rest of the world’s life mission, to beat the US in basketball.
The rest of the world doesn’t build and sustain good baseball leagues because we always take the best players and bring them here. Japan and other Latin American countries still do have professional baseball leagues.
The best hockey players are Russians and Canadians, easily. Finland, other places such as that. Don’t try to put hockey on us. We just bring them here and pay them a lot of money to entertain us.
We don’t need formula 1, we have NASCAR. Soccer (what you guys call football) is not that popular here. Oh yeah, except for the girl’s team. Us guys don’t see the appeal of running around kicking each other in the shins and flopping around on the field trying to fool the referee into thinking we were fouled when we really weren’t.
Our official main sport is baseball. But our true real sport is American football. I don’t care what anyone else says or thinks, those guys are the toughest in the world on any sport field. They will hurt you, and hurt you badly.

News Flash: Lack of necessity for padding does not equal toughness.
Funny: Despite Rugby’s supposed Int’l aspect the entire section has about 50 posts vs. American football’s 1500 posts.
According to the following study American Football and even hockey rank much higher in difficulty level than Rugby.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills
Sports are bigger enterprises and more lucrative in America than any other single country in the world at the amateur and pro level, and yes, I’ve been around the world.
America has it’s own preferences in sports (is that allowed?) although almost every sport in existence is practised here in America. The most popular sports are American Football, Baseball, and basketball. The latter two sports have become int’l if you haven’t noticed. Football (GridIron) is also growing Internationally.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IFAF_World_Cup
Soccer, F1, and rugby have a presence in America. They are niche sports. Soccer is big as a youth sport for those that consider actual Football to rough. America also dominates the Olympics, and other Int’l events like swimming, Track & field, and MX.
The sports of American football and Rugby at this stage of their development have very little in common. Contradictory to what you have been told American football is not rugby with pads. Rugby is about as rough as American sandlot tackle football when it’s played sans gear, which doesn’t even approach real organized HS, collegiate, semi-pro, or Pro football in term of hitting.
Unlike you I’m not going to call rugby players wimps and all the other terms I’ve seen here used against Americans, but you need to educate yourself. Football is a more violent sport than rugby with more serious injuries.
Also your America bashing is off point. You’re supposed to bash America for being too violent.
To the 98 lb. P_$_Y immediate below me. You don’t know what the heck you’re talking about. Trying looking up the injury statitics for football as compared to rugby. The idea that pads prevent any injury is ludicrous. Put on a helmet and leathers get your vespa up to 15 mph and run straight into a wall. Then come back and tell the class.

the answer is simple : because they are AMERICANS…
americans are just too scared to play those "man" sports… the injury is part of any sport and one of the guys said "americans are wise enough to not get hurt"… wat a bunch of pussies… i feel sorry for the chicks in america cuz all the americans know how to do is play some soft dumbass sport and rape the crap outta girls and transmit STIs…

Im british and i love a bit of rugger. I wear pads because it takes the force out of tackles and keeps me warm in the winter.
And for american footballl its its in a totally different league when it comes to danger.
1: They tackle everyone even without the ball
2: More tackles more oppurtunity to get hurt
3: Harder tackles
4: Its just a good idea to be safe,- F1 drivers wear Harnesses because it keeps them safe- Boxers wear gloves because it keeps them safe
Its just the sensible thing to do for a dangerous sport

The main difference is that in American Football, 1 man on a team has to think. In rugby, 30 players have to think. You don’t need to be big and strong and fast to be a great rugby player (though it helps…). If you can see gaps in opposing defences, kick or pass well, or just be really agile, then you can be good at rugby. In American Football, your position is very specific, in rugby, it is flexible. Just because you are playing number 8 doesn’t mean that if the fly-half goes down into a ruck, you can’t step into the pocket.
