My son is two years old and has low iron. Every time I give him his iron medicine he makes his self sick?

I put him on whole milk when he was three months old to cure his acid reflux ( an old wise tale that acutally worked). He was on every kind of formula out there and none helped so I made the switch. He has had low iron since he was a year old and was Iron Supplement drops. Well his dr. said he could go off of them but for his two year checkup his iron was low again and had to be put on them again. I can not get him to take them, I hold him down and everythign to get him to take them and he cries so much he makes his self sick. He is such a picky eater its hard to get him to eat anything rich in iron. Anyone know of anything else I can try or discuss with his peditrician?

my daughter had low iron and her pediatrician said we could do the prescription or we could use half of a flinstones chewable and crush it up into her yogurt or applesauce.

it brought up her iron and she took it just fine.

You didn’t say if you tried adding it to his juice or put it in his apple sauce or something.

my mum had to take iron tablets because she was aenemic. The ones the doctore prescribed made her stomach sick. She went to the chemist and she got some weaker ones in an orange flavour. Your poor son. Go and see a chemist.

cook his food in a cast iron pan. I heard that the pan leaves iron deposits in the food and is less hard on the stomach than iron supplements.

One way is to make sure he eats leafy green vege’s and to lay low on the processed grains and sugars… real low.

He’d be off to a great start if a good portion is vegetables.

Try mixing the iron drops into flavored applesauce. You can buy Mott’s brand in a six pack of cups. All differnt kinds, blueberry applesauce, cherry applesauce.

Also oatmeal any flavor of instant oatmeal he likes.

Don’t ever give on an empty stomach as iron is a stomach irritant.

I wouldn’t give in liquids as it will taste nasty.

Perhaps you can try to get him to eat different things, just keep trying. Red meats, nuts, and beans contain iron. However, things like cereals and pastas are now becoming fortified with iron and other dietary suppliments. Spinich is also very rich in iron, but I doubt that’s one of the foods he likes. You may also want to try withholding things he likes until he takes his medicine, and if that fails, you are the parent and at the age of two you should be able to handle him.

Are you trying to just put the drops in his mouth? Those taste pretty nasty. I alway put my kid’s vitamins (this would include iron supplements) in their milk or juice. They never knew it was in there. I don’t know if this will work with your 2 year old (he might be too smart for that at his age), but it’s worth a try. Good luck to you.

i agree with everyone above! you should crush flinstone tablets into yoghurt or insert the iron drops in something sweet that disguises the taste. he might be a little old, but you can still try to feed him infant FORTIFIED iron cereal and baby oatmeal while inserting real cut up fruit peices. its still appetizing and works like a charm, my friend used this idea! she said it worked wonderfully.
