Is there anyway to stop a person from my past from getting rich from telling the world all my dirty secrets?

I am an author on the edge of getting really famous ( just signed a movie deal) and I am wondering if a person from my past like high school can write a book about me or say something about me that would potentially make me look bad

There’s no real way to stop this sort of thing from happening, although if someone does it you could sue them for defamation. They’d need some sort of evidence that the allegations were true. Of course, if that evidence is there, then there probably isn’t a great deal you can do about it.

Keep in mind of course that not every author who gets a movie deal become "really famous" in that everyone knows who they are and you’re mentioned in the tabloids a lot. Most movies and tv series are based on a written story, but oftentimes the author isn’t that famous themselves.

You could try for a super-injunction if you lived in the UK.

If it ever became known that you actually had one people would hate you just for that though.

Write a book, not likely. Rat you out to the tabloids, sure. The defense to slander is the truth.

People can say what they want once it’s out it’s out and people will voice their opinions on it. You could probably do something to keep it hush but nothing can stop anyone from talking

If those dirty secrets are true, there’s not a whole lot you can do to protect yourself. The only exception would be if it was privileged information, such as your doctor back then couldn’t get rich by divulging you had a new STD every other week. But if you had a reputation for sleeping around, that’ll get out and you can’t really stop it.

If those dirty secrets are fictitious, then you’d be somewhat protected by slander and/or defamation laws. But those are usually reactive/corrective (meaning you can’t do anything until after the secrets are out).

    edit:
If you use a pen name, it’ll provide you a little bit of anonymity that could keep your old schoolmates from even knowing to shop around their stories.
